(editor’s opinion: yes. yes they should. it’s really not that hard.)

This is a tough one. And I’m honestly not sure how I feel about it. I get generally offended when actors portray ethnicities not their own. Because that’s often a way to try and continue fetishizing whiteness, and white standard of beauty, even though the main character is supposed to be Mexican/Japanese/Navajo or what have you. And yeah, it isn’t that hard to hire non-white actors. But I have no issue at all with people portraying sexualities not their own, or sexes not their own (hi, Cate Blanchett. I liked your Bob Dylan.) In fact, I feel like those kinds of “acting” are generally quite progressive, and that to limit the portrayal of fictional gay people as the terrain of gay actors stratifies the idea that homosexuality is so intrinsic that a straight person could never have anything to do with it, or that “male” is territory that could never be imagined and performed correctly by a woman.

Is that a double standard? Maybe. I’ll need to think about it more. But I guess at least my gut-instinct on trans acting is to link it to performed sexuality/sex, rather than performances of race.

  22. dangerousjamie said: I think trans actors shouldn’t be limited to t-roles, and a t-actor in a t-role means that film will likely be watched by a limited audience. Cis-actors in t-roles that are well written and respectful can go some way to helping the cause, perhaps.
